‘Mamma Mia’ Sequel Coming Summer 2018!

Mamma Mia! Universal just announced that we’re getting a sequel to the 2008 musical hit next summer!

WARNING: The following article contains an abundance of ABBA song puns. I apologize in advance, but you have been warned.

“You are the Dancing Queen!” Um, so yeah. I am not ashamed in any way to admit that I am a male in my twenties and I absolutely love the movie Mamma Mia! (2008). It is such a happy, upbeat, funny, and feel-good movie with amazing, catchy, and irresistible songs by the classic ABBA. And what a fun and supremely talented cast!

Fans of the movie will be happy to hear that according to Deadline, Universal Pictures has just announced that a sequel, Mamma Mia: Hear We Go Again (I mean come on, what a perfect title), will be hitting theaters next summer on July 20, 2018!

The sequel is reportedly set to see the returning cast from the first film, which includes: Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgård, and Christine Baranski, and will be filmed again at the beautiful and jaw-dropping Greek Islands. The music of course will again be by ABBA, unused songs and maybe a few returning ones.

This is the first we have heard anything or even suspected anything was in development for a sequel. What a rare and refreshing thing to have a movie kept under wraps only to hear that we just have to wait until next year for it to release! How great is that? Usually we hear about a film, especially a sequel, several years before it actually happens, let alone just the talks and rumors about a project actually coming to fruition. The first film was a huge box office success, so a sequel would seem hardly surprising. However, sequels to movie musicals are not really a common thing, especially the majority that are based off of stage productions. This news certainly surprised me! Maybe not everything is… “Money, Money, Money.”

What a perfect way to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the original film, almost to the day: Mamma Mia was released on July 18, 2008 (Coincidence? Probably not). Naysayers or those having second thoughts on a sequel might just have to wait until it comes out, when they’ll hear it chanting, “Take a Chance on Me.”

No plot synopsis has been revealed yet, however the last time we saw our characters, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and Sky (Dominic Cooper) decided to wait on their marriage and travel the world for a while; Donna (Meryl Streep) on the other hand, accepted Harry’s (Pierce Brosnan) marriage proposal at the end of the film, when he performed “Say I Do,” with a snap, and a wink and a smile at the camera. It will be interesting to see where the story goes next, especially since the first time the source material from which the film was based was the stage show, which premiered in London, England on April 6, 1999, and opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre, New York on October 18, 2001.

“When All is Said and Done,” Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (2018) will dance and jive into theaters next summer on July 20, 2018. Until then, all we can say is: “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”
