Man of Steel fans rejoice! We reported that the Superman reboot grossed $21 million just from Thursday night screenings and over the weekend it continued to soar over the US box office. This makes it the highest grossing June movie opening ever at a whopping $113 million. It surpassed Toy Story 3 which received $110 million during its June 2010 release.
The reboot also did extremely better than the November 2006 reboot, Superman Returns, which received $52.5 million on its opening weekend. It definitely looks like this is the movie that will kick off the franchise – the sequel and Justice League movie will be coming soon.
Overall, the Man of Steel is number 15 overall in highest grossing openings. The number one spot goes to The Avengers which opened last year with $207 million. It is followed by the recent Iron Man 3, which reached $174 million during its opening week in May.
The film, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon, also did well in the foreign markets over the past weekend – according to the Hollywood Reporter it grossed $71.6 million oversees.
The $113 million places Man of Steel at the top of the box office this past weekend. Last week’s top movie The Purge moved to number five. The just released Seth Rogen/James Franco film This is the End debuted at number two with $20.5 million.
Now it’s only a matter of time till we see where the Man of Steel places in the future/all-time box office!
