Marvel is bringing yet another superhero series to the small screen -- Cloak And Dagger has been greenlit for Freeform (formerly ABC Family). Variety is reporting the network has placed a straight-to-series order for the new show, marking the first Marvel enterprise for the youth-centric channel.
Cloak And Dagger centers around two teen runaways in New York City. Tandy is from a privileged background with a wealthy, neglectful mother, and Tyrone is a runaway from Boston with a debilitating stutter. The two meet and find themselves in the clutches of a nefarious chemist who injects them with drugs, causing them both to develop powers. Tandy gains the ability to wield light daggers, and Tryone absorbs criminals in darkness. The young couple fall in love, dubbing themselves Cloak and Dagger, and declare a war on drugs with a focus on protecting homeless youth.
Created for Marvel by Bill Mantlo, the characters first appeared in Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 in March of 1982. They appeared as guest characters for several issues before receiving their own comic series in October of 1983. The characters made several appearances throughout the Marvel Universe over the years, teaming up with Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Cat, Nightwatch, Iron Fist, Deathlok, Morbius, Venom and Firestar in Maximum Carnage. The duo later became part of Captain America's faction, opposing the Superhero Registration Act in Civil War.
Freeform seems to be building its roster quite nicely with the success of the breakout YA fantasy series Shadowhunters heading into its second season. And, although a schedule has yet to be determined, pairing Cloak And Dagger with Shadowhunters on the same night could make for some seriously must-see TV!
No other information has been released, so we have yet to see which young actors will be next to join the Marvel family. Who do you think should be Tandy and Tyrone? Leave us a comment, and let's chat!
