We’ve been keeping you up to date on casting news for Marvel’s next big film franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, and it looks like we may have ourselves a villain soon! Lee Pace, most recently seen as Thranduil in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Fernando Wood in Lincoln, is said to be in final negotiations for the upcoming Marvel picture! The identity of his villainous character is being kept hush-hush for the time being.

Pace would be joining an interesting cast of stars if he signs on. Originally the actor was being considered to play the film’s hero, Star Lord, but that role went to Parks & Recreation’s Chris Pratt; Avatar’s Zoe Saldana will be playing Gamora, WWE superstar Dave Bautista has signed on to play Drax the Destroyer, and The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker has been cast as Yondu. Ophelia Lovibond has also been cast in an unnamed-as-of-yet supporting role.

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy is set to begin in June, so we expect all final casting decisions to be made very soon! It may be worth noting that in early concept art for the film, the heroes depicted included Drax the Destroyer, Star Lord, and Gamora, as well as Groot (a giant anthropomorphic tree) and Rocket Raccoon (exactly what he sounds like – a space raccoon). Can we expect to see these characters cast sometime soon? Keep an eye on PopWrapped to find out!

The current release date for Guardians of the Galaxy is August 1, 2014.
