Mason Rose Gray is back showing us more depth to her emotion and music with her latest release “Unrecognized”. Known for her signature husky vocals and raw, sheer truth in her music, Rose’s music carries a warmth and relatability wrapped up in a cuddle of familiarity. Her sound blends indie, folk and blues with her inspiration flooding in from the likes of Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish and David Bowie.
“Unrecognized” leans into Gray’s experience with emotional and physical abuse; including the huge importance of speaking up about the issue. Despite the track being immensely emotionally challenging to write, with her warrior strength, she rose above her trauma to raise awareness, and provide comfort for others, saying: “I believe as a society it’s more and more prevalent. I wanted to bring awareness and take the listener on a deep truthful journey through the anguish and turmoil one goes through when experiencing anger and rage; the feeling as if they don’t know who they are or even recognize themselves.”
Sonically the track starts off simply with a delicate arrangement of acoustic elements, simple drums and tender, rippling pools of electric guitar that builds tension and emotion through a thickening texture. “Unrecognized” surprises you; with her most emotional guitar yet, the single increases with passion and movement, leaving you feeling refreshed and relieved by the end of the track. This song is not just important, but truly moving. “’Unrecognized’ is a metaphor for burnt toast; sometimes you get knocked down in life and it doesn’t always go according to plan,” Gray explains. “You feel a loss of control which sometimes can be detrimental, but my motto is throw it away and start over another day or just eat it.”
