It’s official: I’ll never be as successful as Grumpy Cat. Not only was this famous kitty voted Meme of the Year at this year’s Webby Awards, she has landed herself a movie deal!
Todd Garner and Sean Robbins of Broken Road Productions have, alongside Grumpy Cat’s reps (yes, the feline has a PR team), have gotten together to produce a “Garfield-like” film with the cat as the central figure. In it, Grumpy Cat (whose real name is Tardar Sauce) will be given the power of speech, which should be very interesting!
But wait – what are the chances that the subject of a meme could actually make a successful movie? Well, Grumpy Cat has already proven that she has the stuff to capture audiences by way of her appearances on shows like Anderson Cooper Live, The Soup, Good Morning America, and Today, not to mention her 20 million plus YouTube views and various merchandise.
Todd Garner says this of his future star: “This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy…You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”
What do you think? Would you see a Grumpy Cat movie?
