Middle Child Talk Debut Single “Burn Out”

“…grateful to have someone in life that understands and accepts my crazy and worried mind.”

Praised by Flaunt who said of them that their “minimalistic production style feels evocative of JP Saxe or FINNEAS: a comparison that we don’t take lightly.”, indie-pop duo Middle Child might be a new name on the music scene, but they’re certainly making one heck of a name for themselves. PopWrapped caught up with member Mikey Wax to discover what and who most influences the pair and what inspired their first release.

Who exactly are Middle Child?

Middle Child was created as a side project by myself – I’m a singer/songwriter – & producer Jacob Lee. We were getting together weekly to write pop songs for other artists, and quickly became good friends. Middle Child became a fun side project to escape from our natural pop song tendencies.

Who and what what might you say you’re most inspired or influenced by as artists?

We love pop music but are also inspired by hip hop and more indie artists like Bon Iver.

Your debut single “Burn Out” has been praised by critics, featured on Spotify’s ‘Fresh & Chill’ and ‘Fresh Finds’ editorial playlists and racked up more than 100,000 streams. Where did the idea and inspiration for the track come from?

The inspiration came from being grateful to have someone in life that understands and accepts my crazy and worried mind. Writing it was very natural in that all the songs were started by sitting at a piano late at night with a glass of whiskey.

With the music business finding its feet again and more artists and bands announcing tours for later in the year and early 2022, what can fans expect if they come and check out one of your shows?

A Middle Child concert will visually be a bit psychedelic with elements of childhood nostalgia. We want to combine real feelings of joy and longing.

What’s next for you? Where will you go from here?
