The new single from Miesa called “Blind” is an honest account of love/a relationship gone wrong; something I’m sure many can and will relate to. With its silky smoothy vocals, and a mix of classic R&B inspired sonics, with a fresh, modern twist, it’s a brilliantly stylistic and resonant track from the acclaimed songwriter. PopWrapped caught up with her to talk artistic inspirations, the themes to and behind her music and to learn a little about her upcoming EP.
What exactly is your new single “Blind” about?
It’s about love gone wrong, but “Blind” to me is still a love song. It’s just when a relationship has reached its breaking point, you ultimately say you’re done, but also come to the realization that you’ve said this before. We’ve all been blinded by love at one point or another, so when I heard the song I just thought it was a great story to tell.
You worked with acclaimed producer Viirgos on the track. What was that collaborative process like?
Collaborating in this new age of Covid has definitely been a change. There were lots of emails, voice notes, and Facetime calls but they were so cool to work with. I mean each and every time they delivered. Great team of musicians and producers, which always makes working together better.
A lot of songs today have messages and meaning behind them, so what do you hope this song says to those who hear it? What do you want them to take from it?
I mean there’s always the musical side and then there’s the message. Musically I want them to feel the harmonies, the melodies, the nuances that help tell the story, and really just take it all in. But I also want them to really hear what I am singing about. Sometimes people get so consumed in a relationship that they think that’s all they have. But maybe if they hear their life story back, they’ll realize that being Blind to a relationship does not have to be permanent.
How does your background and experiences shape your song-writing? What themes are most tied to your music?
My team and I joke around that I am a storyteller instead of a songwriter. Life is full of experiences, not always our own, but are great stories that should be told. I think I’m just an emotional sponge. I take it all in and then get with my writing team to creatively let it all out in my music. I think most, if not all of my music will always come back to relationships. Friends, family, partners, spouses, and even strangers, life is really all about relationships and how they shape and mold us.
You live in Miami. How would you say the city influences your music, if it does at all?
Me living in Miami really doesn’t play a role in my music. I’ve always worked with producers and songwriters from around the world, so living in Miami just means I get a little more sunshine when I’m recording.
The music world is forever evolving, but more specifically, how do you think R&B is changing?
For me R&B music is just a reflection of life itself and if life is constantly changing so should the music, but it’s only on the surface. Sure, the production sounds updated, there’s always a new slang, and definitely new vocal effects. But R&B will always dig deep. As artists we find the best way to tell a story.
You have an EP coming out soon. Is there anything you can share or tease about it?
Get ready to be in your feels. It’s going to feel more emotional, but also showcase a few more sides of me musically. I’m really excited to hear what people think, and I think I have a few surprises that my fans are going to really enjoy.
2022 is just around the corner. What have you got planned?
World domination. Just kidding. Honestly just some really good music. There will absolutely be a new EP and album, music videos, and some tours and performances, but more than anything I’m just focused on putting out music that I love and hopefully everyone else will love it too.
