The highly anticipated sci-fi flick from Guillermo de Toro, Pacific Rim, was outshined by cute, yellow Minions at the box-office this past weekend.

The $185 million dollar project barely scraped up $38 million domestically, while Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2 both outshined with $44.8 million and $42.5 million respectively.

“Globally, it was a close race for top ranking this weekend between Despicable Me 2, which collected $100.3 million worldwide, and Pacific Rim’s $91.3 million global weekend tally,” reported Variety. “While the domestic prospects for Pacific Rim appear limited, the pic’s overseas box office could surpass $300 million, according to pundits. That’s partly based on strong opening grosses from markets like Russia and South Korea, where Pacific Rim earned north of $9 million in each territory, as well as prospects in on-deck markets including France, Germany China and Japan.”

Although the numbers for Pacific Rim are less than impressive, it’s still doing better than another summer disappointment; Disney’s The Lone Ranger, which cost over $250 million to create, has barely earned $120 million since its premiere.

Will the Minions dominate the box office for another week or will newcomers Turbo, The Conjuring, R.I.P.D., and Girl Most Likely give the frontrunner some competition?
