Last night, a new Miss USA was crowned. Erin Brady, Miss Connecticut, walked away with the crown, much to the chagrin of forty-nine other contenders. However, Brady is not the only one making headlines today. In fact, one of her competitors has reached viral status with her answer, or lack there of, to a question posed by Nene Leakes.
Marissa Powell, Miss Utah, had a painfully awkward moment during the question-and-answer portion of last night’s show. The question given to her by Leakes is as follows:
"A recent report shows that in 40 percent of American families with children, women are the primary earners, yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?" Leakes asked.
Powell came back with this response:
"I think we can relate this back to education, and how we are continuing to strive to," she stated. A pregnant pause then ensued. She then followed-up with: "…figure out how to create jobs right now. That is the biggest problem. And I think, especially the men are, um, seen as the leaders of this, and so we need to try to figure out how to create education better so we can solve this problem. Thank you."
The video is hard to watch, it’s so awkward and uncomfortable that you can literally feel it. She seems to just kind of…get lost. And during her fight to find her way back, she gives a creepy, vacant smile that makes you want to give her a flashlight to help her find her way.
Breadcrumbs, Miss Utah. Breadcrumbs.
