Natalie Gish is a rising star. While still fairly unknown to many music fans, having recently released her first EP, her songs – about pushing through the hard times and moving forward to a better and brighter future – are connecting with music fans around the world, particularly since so many of us are struggling with the ongoing effects of the pandemic. PopWrapped caught up with Natalie to find out when she first discovered her musical talent and to learn more about the creative process behind her EP.
Natalie, when did you first start singing and do you play any instruments? Can you remember when the first time you wrote a song?
My parents say I have been singing since I was a toddler. I play guitar but I am learning piano as well to give myself versatility. Honestly, I’m just getting started with song-writing. The first song I wrote was in November of 2019, but I’ve written about 20 so far.
How would you describe your music and sound?
I have been told my sound is a lot like Kacey Musgraves, which is a huge compliment. I’m more on the pop side on this EP, but I explore a little more of a soulful side for some of my new tracks that will drop soon.
What inspired your self-titled debut EP?
When I wrote these songs I was learning a lot of life lessons. These four tracks are about being able to move on from something no matter how hard it can be and how important it is to be able to rebuild not only relationships, but yourself as well.
Are there any tour plans in the works? Which one city or venue would you most like to perform in?
I haven’t started touring yet, but since I’m living just south of Nashville, Music City would be my first stop.
This might be a bit of a loaded question, especially after the last few years we’ve all lived through, but where do you hope to be in 5 years?
The plan is to have graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with my degree in Recording Industry/Commercial Song-Writing. I also plan to have written, recorded and released an LP or two, grown a huge fan base and beginning to tour the U.S.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I used to ride horses. When I was younger, we owned two horses named Haley and Dutchess. I rode English when I was really little and most of the time Western. One of my very dear friends owns horses so I still get to be around them and ride occasionally.
Finally then, we’re just a couple of weeks away from the end of 2021, so what’s your New Year’s resolution?
My New Year’s resolution is to take care of myself more by going to the gym, eating healthy, and also focusing on mental health. I also want to work on reminding myself of all the things that I am grateful for.
