Neil Gaiman Tells Whovians A Black Doctor In The TARDIS Is Possible

Just days after Peter Capaldi was selected to play the 12th Doctor,  legendary literary icon Neil Gaiman dropped a bombshell.  The writer of current best seller The Ocean At The Bottom Of The Lane took to Tumblr to state that a black actor was offered the iconic role but turned it down.

“I was rather disappointed that Paterson Joseph didn’t get it last time, although I’ve loved Matt’s Eleven.” Gaiman wrote.  “I have no doubt there will be [a black doctor].”

Gaiman wrote on and declared that there was one black actor who was approached to play the Doctor however they turned down the role. In addition, Gaiman stated in his Tumblr blog that it might be a while for a female doctor to be introduced in the future.

“Do I think it’s time to cast a woman as the Doctor? Not yet. Not quite…. If I were show-running (I’m not) I wouldn’t cast a woman as the Doctor yet, and it would absolutely be on my list of things to do in the following regeneration.”

Since the Sunday casting announcement, fans have been divided with Capaldi’s role as the 12th Doctor.   However Gaiman has high hopes from Capaldi’s take on the character. I think Peter’s a brilliant actor… I can’t wait to see what he does. I’m glad that we’re getting an older Doctor — we’ve had two puppies, it’s time to see someone older. It’ll change the nature of the relationship with Clara in interesting ways, for a start.”
