According to a recent report by IGN, Netflix will soon be producing an original series based on the plot of the popoular video game saga The Witcher. The game's plot is derived from a series of eight novels of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, who will apparently serve as an official creative consultant for the upcoming Netflix show.
“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories," Sapkowski stated, "staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing."
In addition to Sapkowski, former Witcher cut scene director Tomas Baginski will be brought on board to direct at least one episode of each season the Netflix series will air.
Seeing as how The Witcher video game allows for a mulititude of stories to play out based on the choices of the player, it isn't yet clear what the storylines of this upcoming Netflix series will cover. However, appointed executive producers Sean Daniel (The Mummy (1999)) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) have shed some light on the upcoming show's plot details. “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world," they said. "The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”
Additionally, both Baginski and executive producer Jarek Sawko explained that they would also take the original book series into consideration when developing the show's overarching plot. "There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”
Platige Image, a Polish visual effects company will also co-produce. As of now, no casting choices nor a release date have been announced.
