Netflix’s ‘On My Block’ Is A Cheesy Comedy With True Heart

Netflix strikes gold once more with their original series On My Block, which was renewed for a second season just days ago. With our Twitter timeline freaking out about this show, we decided it was time to check it out and we are not disappointed with what we saw. The show consists of ten, thirty minutes, episodes which makes it an easy five hour binge. We promise it’s so worth your time and we can’t believe we have to wait for season 2 because we wanted more before the credits could even roll.

On My Block is about four high schoolers in a rough, ok very rough, LA neighborhood. These kids are best friends, some more then friends, and they have each other’s backs for every challenge they might, or will definitely, face. The group’s center is Monse (Sierra Capri), a young girl whose mother left when she was only two, but she is the one who makes sure her crew sticks together no matter what fight they might have. One of those centers of drama revolves around Monse and Cesar (Diego Tinoco) as they navigate feelings for each other, keeping those feelings from their friends, and Cesar’s obligation to join his older brother’s gang and all the danger that holds. Cesar’s character has the most drama wrapped around him but he’s still one of the most fun loving members of the cast. Jamal (Brett Gray) is their smart friend who is also not a rule breaker or a good secret keeper. Jamal’s inability to keep secrets holds some of the show’s most hilarious moments. Finally, Ruby (Jason Genao) finishes up this foursome and he is indescribable, but we promise you will absolutely love him. These four young actors and actresses are so talented and make this show even better with their own chemistry.

We don’t want to tell you too much of the plot for fear of spoiling the show for you, so we’ll tell you a few of our favorite moments and secondary characters instead. Some of the show’s biggest dramas, aside from Monse and Cesar or the ending, can be found in the introduction of Olivia (Ronni Hawk). Olivia moves in with Rudy’s family because of issues with her own parents and she’s beautiful which means Ruby begins a quest to win her heart. Ruby’s household contains a lot of the show’s greatest strengths because his Grandmother (Abuela) is next. Peggy Blow plays Ruby’s Abuela and in her first few appearances, she seems like the nice Grandma character, but later we find out she smokes week (A LOT) and teams up with Jamal to solve the mystery of their small neighborhood. Finally, Jasmine (Jessica Marie Garcia) plays the sassy and slightly, overly slutty girl who wants to be in the group but they continually outrun her because her asthma holds her back, but this girl will still break it down when she’d dancing, inhaler at the ready. So many big things happen for these teens during the show’s first season, you won’t be able to stop watching because each episode is better then the last.

On My Block is full of great laughs but also heart. It could be said that this is a modern day Full House or Family Matters because of its ability to keep you laughing while also showing us just how the world should be. Netflix greenlit this piece but it was created by Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft, and Lauren Iungerich who have worked on shows like Empire and classic films such as US Marshals. They are a talented writing and production team but this is going to be their biggest break because it is such an amazing show.

You should definitely watch On My Block because it has great acting, writing, and a story that will keep you coming back for more. If you’ve already binged it, what did you think? Did you love it or was it just another high school centric show? If you haven’t, grab some snacks and get busy. Watch the trailer below and remember, season 2 is already approved which means we will be getting more Monse, Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal!
