New CORPSE is giving us life

CORPSE aka Corpse Husband is the latest iteration of a pop culture enigma, and with good reason. Beginning his YouTube career in 2015, he narrated horror stories via a voice that is unmistakable and impossibly deep. CORPSE’s exposure swelled to 1.23M in 2020 on YouTube, well before his first musical release.

“Hot Demon B!tches Near U!!!” dropped September 7th of this year at midnight. It racked over three million views on YouTube and over 11 million listens on Spotify, no small feat within a week. No doubt the air of mystery he has garnered- he who has never shown his face or revealed his entire given name- has only fueled the wildfire that is CORPSE.

Despite being personally anonymous, he already has a solid CV. He played the low bit hit, ‘Among Us’ for a get-out-the-vote stream last October benefitting the 2020 presidential election, with House Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez & Ilhan Omar. He has over 900K Twitch followers without ever having used the platform.

In April of this year CORPSE participated in another ‘Among Us’ stream benefitting Feeding America on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’, With The Roots, YouTube streamers Valyrae, Disguised Toast, and Sykkuno, and actors Noah Scnapp and Gaten Mazzaro from the Netflix show ‘Stranger Things’; it was a masterful debut to the mainstream.

CORPSE’s lyrics hold a firm pulse on current culture. Tracks like, “Cat Girls Are Ruining My Life!”, and the subsequent “E-GIRLS ARE RUINING MY LIFE!” call two playful cultural subsets with solid overlap. His lyrics reference beloved anime like ‘Death Note’, ‘BERSERK’, and ‘Devilman Crybaby’. The track and video for ‘agoraphobia’ seem an homage to the ubiquitous YouTube channel, ‘lofi hip hop radio- beats to relax/study to’.

*DAYWALKER-  Machine Gun Kelly ft. CORPSE” is the most recent power move by this musician, not that he needed the bump; this socially savvy presence has the know-how to take over our over-ears, and the social zeitgeist. Anyone who can growl, “choke me like you hate me” in a track and still win over a house representative playing video games? CORPSE is here to stay.
