Is anyone else chomping at the bit for news on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug? Well, Peter Jackson has taken to YouTube to satiate us by answering some questions! We won’t spoil everything, but in addition to a fan there are a couple of special guests asking questions. Near-legendary Lord of the Rings fanboy Stephen Colbert is featured, asking an appropriately complex and geeky question, along with Billy Boyd, who played Pippin in the original trilogy.

In the video questions do get answers, but we also get to see some brand new things as well. We get a look at some of the concept art for Mirkwood, the forest ruled by the elven king Thranduil (played by Lee Pace, Lincoln). Additionally there is some footage from the upcoming film, which features Orlando Bloom, who is reprising his role as Legolas in the upcoming film. We also get to see some of Thranduil in action, plus his bodyguard Tauriel.

Tauriel is played by Evangeline Lilly (“Lost”), and a still of the character was also just released today.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second of the three films based on J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit, will be released on December 13th of this year.
