Written and produced during the never ending pandemic and quarantine, Nashville-based band, Nightly is back with their new single, “you should probably just hang up“. Inspired by a friend’s failed relationship, the track marks a new era for the band. “We wrote ‘you should probably just hang up’ about a toxic situation ,” Capeci explains in a recent interview. ” The song came to us super quickly, and we immediately recorded and produced it in Joey’s basement.”
With a fresh start to 2020, the band (composed of cousins Jonathan Capeci and Joey Beretta, and drummer Nick Sainato) recently released their cinematic track “the movies (ft Charli Adams)” under their new partnership with BMG Recordings. Additionally, this release is the start to many amazing releases, this year.
PopWrapped (PW): I like how you guys combined heartbreak lyrics with a catchy, upbeat, production. What would you say inspired this track and the route you wanted to go with it? Why did you choose to keep it upbeat, rather than a slow type track that we typically see with lyrics like these?
NIGHTLY (N): For this particular song, we made the beat and the chord progression first, and wrote the lyrics after. The lyric inspiration came from a conversation I had with a friend a few nights before. We actually did write a slower song about the same thing, but this one just felt better.
(PW): “you should probably just hang up” was written and recorded all during this COVID 19 pandemic and quarantine. How are you guys managing to hold up during this time, and is this single a collection of tracks that you’ve been working on specifically during quarantine?
(N): We are doing good! I think like everyone we have good and bad days, but overall grateful to have each other and be able to make music. so we started in the studio a few weeks before this all went down, so the songs we’re working on are from both before and during quarantine.
(PW): I know for me, this time is very hard on motivation, inspiration, and the overall stability of my mental health. Many of us are going through that & are pretty unsure how to get out of that funk. How are you staying motivated and inspired to put out your best work while keeping your mental health at the forefront?
(N): It’s definitely been a challenge. as I was mentioning, for me it really comes in waves. we’ll have a good week, then a few bad days and it can be hard to get out of the funk. a few things that have helped me are being outside whenever possible, going for a drive, reading, and focusing on my physical health. have also been talking to friends and family very often on the phone or facetime.
(PW): You guys are set to release several tracks throughout this year. Is this single (you should probably just hang up) a look into what we can expect from you guys or will the next pieces of work be of their own uniqueness? Additionally, you’re cousins.. When it comes to working with family on your dream, how is that? Do you guys work well together or are there times where you feel like you’re being overshadowed or at a standstill?
(N): I think that the collection of songs will feel cohesive, but we have definitely gone some places musically that we haven’t been yet. Each song has its own vibe. Well, It’s really the only thing we’ve ever known so I don’t have a lot to compare it to. We have different strengths so we really work well together and compliment one another. We sure have different opinions sometimes, but I think that’s what makes our band what it is. it’s not a solo project and our combination is better that either of us on our own.
Nightly’s new single, “you should probably just hang up” is now available on all music platforms, worldwide.
