Oceans Eleven started its cinematic life as a hit blockbuster in 1960, and starred Sammy Davis Junior and Frank Sinatra. It was revived in 2001, starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon, and was followed with a pair of sequels, which were not as well received as the first film. The Ocean's franchise is back on our screens in summer 2018, and whilst little is being given away right now, the most exciting part of this reboot is the all-female main cast, comprising of some huge household names.
Recent studies have found that women make up 52% of cinema goers, yet only 14% of protagonists in blockbuster films are film-makers. However, the Ocean's film marks an exciting trend for the industry. In the coming year, there will be several blockbuster releases which will star women in the leading roles. Nasty Women will be released in August and will star Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in the remake of the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. A rise in female action heroes has prompted a wave of industries to take notice of strong female characters. Party Casino's slots feature games based on historical female characters which will stand out among even the toughest women of 2018, and even Barbie has an upcoming film release, in which Barbie is expelled from Barbieland for not being perfect enough, and sets off on an adventure of her own.
Ocean's will come at the beginning of a wave of new action heroes and features Sandra Bullock as Ocean. Bargaining a release from prison, she plans to conduct a heist and secure over $100,000,000. Of course, it won't be that easy, and she won't be doing it alone. As with previous Ocean's films, her first task will be to assemble her crew, and find a group of women with unique attributes to execute her plan. The Ocean's characters remain similar to the previous films. Among Bullock's team are Rihanna, who makes a film appearance as seasoned computer hacker, Eight Ball - Helena Bonham Carter, who plays an outlandish stylish, and Cate Blanchett, taking on the role of Bullock's sidekick. Awkwafina plays a tough pickpocket, and Mindy Haling of The Mindy Project stars as a jewellery maker. From the line up, it is clear to see that the film won't just be packed with action, but it'll have some great comic moments, which we can see from the trailer.
Repost from @entertainmentweekly: After #TheHungerGames, director #GaryRoss was eager to find another project that would shatter expectations while showcasing women kicking serious ass. ???? What better than an all-female version of the popular 'Ocean's franchise? ???? “I just thought it was interesting to invade the terrain that always had an off-limits sign. That’s an important thing to do,” says Ross, who directed #Oceans8 and also wrote the script with newcomer #OliviaMilch. This is a departure for the franchise which produced the Ocean's Trilogy, which used to be commandeered by George Clooney. However, he remains as a producer on the upcoming film, and hints have been made that a cameo could be on the cards. What we know of the plot so far leads us to a jewellery theft at the lavish Met Ball (during which there may be star turns from the likes of Serena Williams), and plans to steal a necklace from a movie star, played by Anne Hathaway. Whatever you thought of previous Ocean's movies, this one is sure to take the franchise down a new road, and could possibly mark the start of a revolution in Hollywood. After a turbulent 2017 for the industry, 2018 will bring with it new stories and great female characters like we have never seen before.
