Once Upon A Time: Dream Casting-The Villains Edition

NULL

Jacob Elyachar

Staff Writer

When Once Upon A Time returns this Fall, the show’s biggest bad guys: Regina (Lana Parrilla), Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) and Captain Hook (Colin O’ Donoghue), will give up on their villainous agendas and unite to save Henry from certain doom!

With both Cora and Maleficent dead and Greg and Tamara on the run with Henry, the ABC fantasy drama needs a couple of strong villains to not only be on par with our traveling sextet but also menace Storybrooke and possibly conquer the town.

Here are PopWrapped’s wishes on the classic Disney (and literary) villains that we want to see in the third season:

Sidney Glass/Magic Mirror/”Jafar?” (Giancarlo Esposito)

Recently TVLine broke the news that the Breaking Bad actor will be back for the first few episodes of the new season.   While Sidney Glass was imprisoned by Regina for failing to frame Snow/Mary Margaret for murder, he could have plotted his revenge behind the scenes and received his Genie powers back after Gold successfully brought magic into the real world.  Esposito’s fairy-tale counterpart could be a good candidate to be the villainous sorcerer because there were hints of his Agrabah heritage that were teased in Season One.

Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close)

Another great candidate to terrorize the Storybrooke residents while the Big Seven are away is Cruella De Vil.   She could easily buy all of Storybrooke with her wealth and could go toe-to-toe with several characters that were left behind including Belle, Granny, LeRoy and Archie.   Even though it has been 13 years since she last played the iconic villainess, legendary actress Glenn Close would bring a lot of Generation Y members to the show just to see her portray the 101 Dalmatians villainess one more time.

Ursula (Queen Latifah)

Since the show will be taking place in Neverland, there will be lots of mermaids swimming around.  If Ariel could be making an appearance this upcoming season, then chances are that her archenemy could be right behind her.  While Ursula’s original portrayer, Pat Carroll, is too old to play the part, legendary photographer Annie Liebovitz had the right concept in casting Queen Latifah to portray the sea witch in her photo campaign for Disney Parks’ “Year of A Million Dreams.” The rapper-actress can balance both Ursula’s sinister and comedic sides and could be a great antagonist to Regina, Rumple and Hook.

The Witches of “Oz: The Great & Powerful” (Mila Kunis & Rachel Weisz)

Once creators Adam Horwitz and Edward Kitsis are infamous for dragging stories out.   In addition, they have also stated that they would like to bring the Land of Oz into this season.  If they could not get the Wicked witches (Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth) to reprise their roles, they could go keep it within the Walt Disney family and bring in Kunis and Weisz to reprise their roles from Oz the Great & Powerful.   It would be interesting to see how Evanora could try to entrance Gold or Hook.  In addition, Theodora’s fall from grace could serve as a big wake-up call to Regina!

Dracula (Christoph Waltz)

Ever since Once revealed that Dr. Whale was Dr. Victor Frankenstein, it has left a door open for fictional characters from the literary world to appear on the show.  One big villain that could bear his fangs this season could be Count Dracula.  The Oscar-winning actor, Christoph Waltz, has played incredible bloodthirsty roles in his career and could be a big threat to the sextet (and if he gets into the real world: Storybrooke).

Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris)

Sherlock Holmes’s number one opponent could be the human that can outmaneuver and maybe outthink the great Rumpelstiltskin.  Jared Harris proved that he was capable of matching wits with Robert Downey, Jr. on the Silver Screen in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and could actually go toe-to-toe with fellow British actor Robert Carlyle.  Plus, Moriarty’s craving for power could attract Regina and make him a potential love interest for the Evil Queen.

Chernabog (voiced by Michael Shannon)

Fans learned that the Once: Season Three main villain would be Peter Pan.  But what caused Peter Pan to join the dark side?  Could Disney’s God of Evil have brainwashed this great hero and transformed him into a menacing figure?    The show has done a terrific job bringing larger than life creatures including Monstro the Whale, Maleficent’s Dragon form and the Giant onto the small screen.   PopWrapped has full confidence that the show could bring one of Disney’s ultimate bad guys to life.   In order to successfully have Chernabog on the show, Once might want to sign Man of Steel’s Michael Shannon to voice the menacing demon!

Which villain that was not mentioned in this article, should rear their ugly head in “Once Upon A Time’s” third season?

Lucky fans will have a chance to find out at San Diego Comic Con where Horowitz, Kitsis, Carlyle, Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas will be headlining the “Once” panel.
