Sam Heughan is currently starring in Outlander as Jamie Fraser, but before getting the part on Starz’ brand-new drama series, he auditioned for different parts in Game Of Thrones seven times! The actor was casted to play the roles of Renly Baratheon, Loras Tyrell and various members of the Night’s Watch, but did not manage to get a part in HBO’s phenomenal show.
The actor specifically said:
“I auditioned for Game of Thrones seven times! Loads of times. I auditioned for Renly, Loras, some of the members of the Night’s Watch. And I’d always get so close! I’d be like, ‘Guys, just give me a sword!’ Everyone was going in for those parts. But you know, it’s funny about those things. You’re up for so many things, and coming from those auditions, and testing on other shows, I had more experience, more experience with the process.”
He went on to express how all those auditions he had been through gave him confidence for the new part he was up for, but also revealed he had a feeling for Jamie Fraser’s character.
“I don’t know, something about this one just felt right. This part felt different. I knew this character. I felt a connection with him. I knew where he had come from. And I was excited to work with Ron [D Moore].”
Outlander tells the story of a married combat nurse who is magically transported back in time, from 1945 to 1743. Heughan plays a Scottish warrior, to whom she finds herself attracted, even though there is still love in her heart for her husband from the future.
For all the upcoming episodes of Outlander, tune into Starz every Saturday at 9pm ET/PT.
