‘Phantom Thread’ First Trailer Talk

The first look has dropped for this holiday season’s drama, Phantom Thread, which just might be Daniel Day-Lewis’ swan song.

From the director of Boogie Nights (1997) and Magnolia (1999) comes the new film that just might be Daniel Day-Lewis’ swan song, Phantom Thread (2017), and our first look has finally arrived.

Not seen on screen since portraying the iconic 16th President of the United States in Lincoln (2012), Daniel Day-Lewis stars here as Reynolds Woodcock, a reputable and well-known dressmaker of London whose life becomes “altered” by young Alma, played by Vicky Krieps, who soon becomes his muse and “other” lover (Reynolds is already married to Cyril (Lesley Manville)).

Phantom Thread looks pretty good so far

Right off the bat we have a trailer that feels sharp, unique, and definitely art house quality in its own niche. It looks to be Oscar bait, but good Oscar bait none the less. The Paul Thomas Anderson directing style, production design, and cinematography is very clearly present here, with the trailer feeling more like a brief short film by not giving too much of the plot away.

As previously mentioned, this very well might be Daniel Day-Lewis’ last performance, if his initial plans of retirement stay the same. Of course, he could always come back many years later for another role or two. We wouldn’t hold that against him; he’d be welcomed back with open arms. Here, Day-Lewis is unquestionably playing a character, but a character that feels more like himself in a subtle and more realistic way. Just from what we have seen in this trailer, as well as it being his possible goodbye, it would not be startling for him to at least get an Academy Award nomination for this role.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master (2012), There Will Be Blood (2007)), Phantom Thread will star Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln (2012)), Lesley Manville (Maleficent (2014)), Vicky Krieps (A Most Wanted Man (2014)), and Camilla Rutherford (Gosford Park (2001)), and spins its way into theaters this Christmas on December 25, 2017.
