They are one of the biggest bands of all time and though they were only active for ten years, they left an impregnable mark on rock history and inspired a “mania”.
Just a few of their accolades include receiving seven Grammy Awards, a Best Original Song Score Academy Award and 15 Ivor Novello Awards. They also happen to be the current best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over one billion units. They also regularly top best artist of all-time lists. I am of course talking about the Liverpudlian Fab Four themselves: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
It’s not surprising then that Fox’s Glee is dedicating the first two episodes of season five to The Beatles. What is surprising, is that apart from season one’s group number, “Hello, Goodbye”. Chris Colfer’s amazing season two performances of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and “Blackbird”, it’s taken four seasons to have a Beatles tribute.
I grew up on The Beatles so was excited to hear that we’d have two episodes dedicated to their music and immediately started thinking of what songs I wanted to hear and who I wanted to perform them. Below is a Pop 10 list of songs and performers I’d love to see. As such, I’m not going to talk about the songs that have been leaked. This is a song spoiler-free zone. If you want to know about those songs, I’m sure you already know and if you don’t it’s not too hard to dig up.
So sit back, relax and come with me on a magical mystery tour.
“All You Need Is Love” – Rachel (Lea Michele) Well we know the first episode of season 5 is called “Love, Love, Love”, but even without that knowledge, I would still have chosen this song. While I doubt Glee can match the memorable use of this song in the rom-com, Love Actually, I think that we’ll get an interesting twist on this classic. Rachel has never been one of my favourite characters, but I think she has the voice and the presence to pull off this song. I can also see her singing this to Kurt; dispensing some much needed romantic advice.
“A Hard Day’s Night” – Puck (Mark Salling) This rock ballad would sound divine in the hands of one Noah Puckerman. He has the great gravelly tone, the life experience to back it up and a charisma to inject fun, seduction and cheekiness to the number. Not to mention the fact that it would be so cool to hear Mark playing that iconic first chord and rocking out on his guitar through the number. I could see a softer version of a “School’s Out”-type vibe from him but with the same kind of intensity.
“With A Little Help From My Friends” – New Directions This song just screams New Directions group number ending in a group hug and closing one of the episodes. It’s about relying on friends, team work, and togetherness… everything that New Directions represents. Nothing more really needs to be said here.
“Can’t Buy Me Love” – Kurt (Chris Colfer) Chris Colfer has already proved that he can hit a Beatles song out of the ball park and have you weeping before he’s finished the first line. It was so tempting to wish to see him do something like “Hey Jude” or “Yesterday”. Don’t get me wrong, I think he would be utterly amazing doing either of those songs, but he’s already done that kind of a Beatles ballad. I chose this song because it could fit into the episode, but mainly because it is so different to the other two songs Chris has already performed. It’s faster paced, more rock ‘n’ roll and just a fun song to do and I think reflects Kurt’s more confident, flirtier, New York dwelling maturity. Chris would be totally own this.
“All My Loving” – Will (Matt Morrison) and Emma (Jayma Mays) Being Australian and of a certain age, you can’t hear this song without flashbacks to another kind of Glee Club TV show, Young Talent Time. This show was kind of the Australian Mickey Mouse Club I guess and every episode ended with the cast, along with the host, Johnny Young, singing this song so of course it had to make it onto my Pop10. Now I have no idea how they’d work this song into the context of the episode but really when has that ever hindered Glee???) but I think this would work beautifully as a Wemma duet. They are the ones that have the maturity and relationship strength and sing off each other fantastically. If we’re picking up where season 4 ended, this could work nicely as a first dance song possibly.
“I Saw Her Standing There” – Santana (Naya Rivera) I know that Brittana fans are still hurting from the news that due to Heather Morris’ pregnancy and leave from the show, it’s unlikely that Brittana will get back together. Ryan Murphy has also hinted that there could be a savvy New York love interest in Santana’s future and I think with that background, this would be a perfect song for Santana and Naya. Naya could put a sultry spin on this classic and it would be a nice, interesting way of introducing a new character.
“Let It Be” – New Directions and New Yorkers Another song that is just perfect for a group sing along and I think Kurt, Rachel and Santana need to be involved in this one as well, like with “Mamma Mia”. This is a great song to belt out, can be interpreted so many different ways and is iconic Beatles. I’ve heard so many different covers of this song that I’m eager to see what the Glee team would come up with. I actually will be very disappointed if this isn’t included, though can see that they might as it’s so iconic and they want to do something unexpected.
“We Can Work It Out” – Blaine (Darren Criss) This fits in so well with Blaine’s over-the-top declarations through song, fits in with his desire to make a grand gesture to Kurt and I can see this as the Blaine on the school steps season opener number. Darren has the voice for this, Blaine has the moodiness. I think it would be a match made in heaven.
“Magical Mystery Tour/Yellow Submarine Mash Up” – New Direction Boys and Girls This is fun, it’s out there, it’s upbeat and I think New Directions could make this work. This could be a comedic number and one that would open the Beatles episode. The boys taking “Magical Mystery Tour” and the girls “Yellow Submarine”. On a high from the Regionals win and the Wemma wedding, this could be celebratory and an energetic start to the season.

I’m a Klaine fan and with the cliffhanger from the end of season 4, you know that there needs to be a Klaine duet in one of these episodes. I think this perfectly captures their relationship at this stage especially when they’re both keeping “secrets” from the other – Blaine that he is planning on proposing and Kurt’s real feelings for Blaine. This has the potential to be a great flirty duet between the two similar to “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. There’s lots of room for to-ing and fro-ing between them and Chris and Darren play that so well together.
There you have it. That’s just my list and there are so many fantastic songs in the Beatles anthology that limiting it to 10 was extremely difficult. Plus I’m more of an old-school cast fan, which is why my list is so originals heavy. We would love to hear what songs you want to see in the two episodes and who you’d like to perform it.
