Pop 5: Parodies That StarKid Should Make

NULL

Brittany Goldfield Rodrigues

Staff Writer

Our favourite troupe of comedic actors, Team Starkid, has parodied a multitude of installments. They parodied Harry Potter three times, with A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel, and most recently A Very Potter Senior YearThey have musically parodied  superhero galore in Holy Musical Batman, and alien films with Starship. I am not so sure if the latter was intended to be a satire, but it was hilarious none the less.

This is a big summer for Starkid – they have a big upcoming project – a staging of their own show Twisted. It’s supposed to do for Aladdin what Wicked did for The Wizard of Oz.

Twisted was a unique feat, as Starkid created a Kickstarter to fund the show. Unsurprisingly, Starkid met its goal before the projects end period. Imagine what Starkid can do on a good budget. In the end, 3,544 donated $142,564. The troupe raised more than their initial $35,000 goal.

Starkid has tackled many iconic installments and we can only pray they continue putting their witty satires on the inter webs. We are spoiled this year with not just one, but two upcoming Starkid projects to look forward too. Still, we are feeling particularly bratty here at PopWrapped, so here are five additional installments we would like to see Starkid take on in song.

5) X-Men

Take a second, and just imagine. Imagine the melodramatic ballads about being mutant. Imagine the costumes for Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, Professor Xavier, there are so many possibilities. It actually makes little sense to adapt this installment into a musical – what is there to sing about?  That is precisely why Starkid needs to do it – because Starkid is the best at making a musical out of something you would never think plausible. Who thought Harry Potter could ever make a good musical? Joe Walker as Wolverine, Brian Holden as a sassy Magneto, Dylan Saunders as a bitter Xavier – it would all be too perfect. Picture the random mutants with off beat powers Starkid could think up- the possibilities are endless.

4) Doctor Who

Take a second and think of all that Starkid could do with a musical about time travel. Doc from Back to the Futurecould be involved, but “The Doctor” would surely deem him an imposter. The male members of Starkid could be different doctors – because in this Starkid production, The Doctor doesn’t regenerate, he has multiple personalities. The females could play the companions – except Lauren Lopez. Imagine her being a singing and dancing Dalek. It’s all so ridiculous – which is why it needs to happen.

3) The Hunger Games

If you didn’t envision Jaime Lynn Beatty as Katniss Everdeen, you are wrong. Who knows what music they could make of this premise – that’s the beauty of it. Imagine the wacked out districts they could derive; District 77 – the nerds, District 105 – the district isolated for being three digits. The weirder and wackier, the better. Lauren Lopez would make an awesome Effie. Just the thought of her saying “May the odds be ever in your favour,” is reason enough for this to happen. Haymitch could easily be channeled by Joe Walker.  Joey Richter would make an adorable Peeta – think of his possible ballads. Oh and the twist, Peeta (Joey Richter) and Gale (Brian Holden) are secretly team “Pale”. That’s right! These fighters in the Hunger Games know of shipping, and they ship each other together.  Woops, sorry Katniss.

2) Peter Pan

Starkid is taking on Aladdinwith Twisted. So…why not take on another Disney film? The set of Neverland would be incredible. With the way Starkid normally interprets iconic stories, I am sure they will make some humorous adjustments. Peter Pan will most likely have an attitude problem, and Captain Hook is probably the true victim. Wendy would probably be pretty bitchy, and surely that ticking alligator will have a solo of their own. Joey Richter is charming enough o pull off peter, and Joe Walker as captain hook would be killer with Dylan Saunders as his right hand man as Smee. A Peter Pan musical is a no brainer. There are more than enough roles to go around – everyone can be part of the “lost girls”! Yeah! That’s lost girls, not lost boys.

1) Glee

Okay, for obvious reasons this would never happen, One of these reasons being that Glee is a parody of itself a lot of the time. Lauren Lopez would make a particularly scary Sue Sylvester, and Meredith a great super melodramatic Rachel Berry. There are enough characters to go around, this production could involve all Starkid members. Imagine what weird plot line there would be. Starkid could draw from all four of Glee’s seasons and parody them in two hours. Obviously Darren Criss would need to be involved – but not as Blaine. Someone else would need to smock on a crap ton of gel, put on those two tight pants, and wear that adorkable bow tie. Revelation – Joe Walker as Blaine and Darren as Mr. Schue. It all fits together so perfectly. It won’t happen, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t.
