Pop 5: Reasons Why We’ll Miss “The New Normal”

The New Normal, starring Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Bebe Wood and NeNe Leakes was only on air for one season before it was canned. It was recently announced that NBC was cancelling the Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler show alongside others including Go On, Smash and 1600 Penn.

The show was progressive and clever as it followed two men, played by Rannells and Bartha, on their journey to adopt a baby together and create a family. Instead, the two men end up adopting the family of their surrogate in the process, adding to the ups and downs of the pairings journey.

The show was well received due to its comedy and forward thinking, which is why its cancellation after only one season came as quite a surprise.

Viewers will miss this show that reminded them about the value of family and acceptance.

1) Shania’s Quirky Nature

Bebe Wood played Shania, the adorable daughter of David and Bryan’s surrogate named Goldie. She did impressions, adopted new personalities, and wore wacky things, but she was wise beyond her years. She provided beautiful sentiments about family, love, and relationships over the season’s course. The highlight of the shows one season is a tie between her portrayal of Little Edie from Gray Gardens, and her Cher impression.

2) Bryan and David’s Relationship

Brian and David’s relationship set a positive example for younger viewers. It depicted how love and commitment is about compromise, and not giving up when the going gets tough. When a problem arose, the pair tackled it together instead of giving up or having breakdowns. The relationship between these two men on the show was healthier than those of a lot of straight couples on sitcoms.

3) The Endless Sass

While almost all the characters of the show have a heart of gold, they also don’t stand for nonsense. They defend themselves and their loved ones with the perfect amount of attitude – or sass as I like to call it. If you have any questions regarding the matter, just YouTube Bebe Wood snapping in a “z“ formation.

4) Fabulous Wardrobe

The females of this show have a stellar wardrobe. Goldie had an endless supply of cute sundresses, NeNe Leakes character Rocky was is always dressed in classy business attire, and Nana post – makeover sported the latest trends. The New Normal was without a doubt great for fashion watching. Bryan, being an older Kurt Hummel, also sported outfits worth tuning in for.

5) Popular Culture References

Ryan Murphy knows popular culture, and he knows the popular culture of now, and then. The season of The New Normal referenced Cher, Grey Gardens, Glee and Sylvia Plath, in a way that was witty and respectful.
