Gay Student Outed By Principal To Parents Before Being Banned From Delivering Speech

Colorado principal made the decision to out gay student Evan Young to his parents before banning the young man from delivering his valedictorian speech.

Yours truly is absolutely DISGUSTED.

In a completely despicable move,  Colorado Twin Peaks Charter Academy high school principal BJ Buchmann has come under fire for outting gay student, 18 year old Evan Young, to his parents during his graduation.

Evan was scheduled to deliver his classes’ valedictorian speech during the ceremony, but Buchmann had learned that Evan had

planned to come out  when speaking. Things then took an unfortunate turn when Buchmann informed Evan that he was not going to do that, and asked him to edit his speech.

When Young agreed to change his speech, he did not change his decision to come out, and was going to press on.

That’s when Buchmann made the disgusting move to tell Evan’s parents that their son was gay before he had the chance to do it himself.

Evan spoke with local press about the circumstances, saying:

“My main theme is that you’re supposed to be respectful of people, even if you don’t agree with them. I figured my gayness would be a very good way to address that.”

“My parents are very liberal. I think they were totally OK with it. But I was not OK with it,”

“I think what it mainly showed is that he didn’t have a lot of sympathy for me, or someone in my position.

“He didn’t understand how personal a thing it was, and that I wasn’t just going to share it with people randomly, for no reason. I thought it was very inconsiderate for him to do something like that, especially without asking me first.”

One would think that the school wouldn’t stand for Buchmann’s actions, but unfortunately, they’re siding with their principal. Attorney for the academy, Barry Arrington called Evan’s attempt inappropriate and that it was not right for him to:

“push his personal agenda on a captive audience.”

Arrington continued that the speech was cancelled in order to:

“protect the solemnity of the evening and to preserve and protect the mission of the school.”

In positive news, Evan may have been denied his chance to speak from the heart at his graduation ceremony, however he has been invited to speak  at an annual awards event held by Out Boulder, the Colorado LGBT group.

Evan is a brave young man for wanting to make such a bold declaration in public, and SHAME on Buchmann and the scool board for not allowing that to happen.
