When news broke that lovable British comedian James Corden would be taking over from Craig Ferguson as the host of The Late Late Show, it brought a lot of attention to the comedian, who was also set to star in the upcoming Broadway revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum that is beginning in April. However, it is likely that the new show will prevent Corden from starring in the show, so it seems the producers are going to have to find a new lead.
The role is that of Pseudolus, a Roman slave with a wicked sense of humor and quirky personality. The role was originated by Zero Mostel, who won a Tony for the performance. Not only that, but subsequent performers Phil Silvers, Nathan Lane and Jason Alexander all won Tonys for performing the role. It is clear this role is awards dynamite, and the producers are looking for a replacement that can live up to the role.
The top pick is Josh Gad, who was nominated for a Tony for The Book of Mormon a few years ago and has gotten quite a fan-base after voicing the quirky Olaf in mega-hit Frozen. However, it seems like Gad is only going to be temporary if he takes the role, as it is rumored producers are considering TV stars Jim Parsons and Jesse Tyler Ferguson for the role. The plan is to have Gad open the show, and when one of the the other two are on hiatus from their shows in the Summer, they will take over the role. They are both interesting choices, and will likely bring the crowds in.
Of course, this is only rumors and speculation, but hopefully whoever gets the role will do great things with it and perhaps even win the character its fifth Tony.
