Multi-platinum-selling rock band Rage Against The Machine has earned their fourth consecutive nomination for the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They have been eligible since 2017, and the eligible band members include Tim Commerford, Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, and Brad Wilk. They are one of 17 musical acts on the electric Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot for the Class of 2022.
Rage Against the Machine are credited for being defenders of social justice that defied sonic boundaries, and rightfully so. They are a group that truly lives up to its name. It’s a political and musical force that could not be reckoned with.
They formed back in 1991, and they took aim at oppressive systems of power (cultural, political, economic, and otherwise). They did everything they could to ignite a revolution, and that was the case with their music.
Their music is a fusion of such genres as hip-hop, punk, metal, funk, and rock. They were part of a musical tradition that was indebted to MC5, the Clash, and Public Enemy.
While plenty of ’90s rock bands supported social justice issues in their music and lyrics, Rage Against the Machine’s rebellious politics stood head and shoulders above. They were not afraid to be raw and vulnerable with their music and storytelling abilities.
They were able to give a voice to the powerless, where they would call out local and global inequalities and they rallied against censorship, corporate cronyism, and government overreach. Most importantly, their music and lyrics is as relevant and timely today as ever.
