Craig who is already a science fiction icon playing Dave Lister in the cult comedy show Red Dwarf, said he would love to be the first black actor to take the helm of the TARDIS. He was quick to say that it would be highly unlikely due to the fact he is a series regular on the soap opera Coronation Street and because of the Red Dwarf connections.

Speaking to website Purple Revolver, the star said: “Yeah, having a black Doctor Who would be double cool. To be asked by the Beeb would be great, it’s such a classic show. But I think there would probably be too much cross-over with Red Dwarf, as we’ve got a new series lined up next year.”

However he is concerned that he would struggle with the special effects that are created by The Mill, as he has always felt the “graphics are crap”. This tongue in cheek comment seems to be more a gibe at Red Dwarf’s special effects, which were always on the cheaper side.

Red Dwarf is expected to return to UK on Dave in 2014 after its successful relaunch last year.
