Renée Zellweger Is Judy Garland In New Biopic

Academy-Award Winner Renée Zellweger has been announced to play the iconic actress Judy Garland in a new biopic.

If you’ve been wishing “somewhere over the rainbow” that Judy Garland would get her own movie, then you can lay those fears to rest. According to CNN, Academy-Award winner Renée Zellweger (Chicago (2002), Cinderella Man (2005)) will be playing the iconic actress in a new future biopic!

Last seen in the title role of Bridget Jones’ Baby (2016), and more recently as Deborah Hall in Same Kind of Different as Me (2017), Renée Zellweger will be starring in this biopic titled Judy, set thirty years after Judy Garland’s Wizard of Oz (1939) success and big break. The film will be directed by Rupert Goold and written by Tom Edge (Netflix’sThe Crown (2016-), Strike (2017-)), and is set to feature some classic Judy Garland songs. As we’ve seen from Chicago, Zellweger has no problem in that department.

It is certainly exciting news to be getting our first Judy Garland movie! Although it really shouldn’t have come much earlier; sometimes we need time to remember our stars, real events, and real people before we immediately make a movie about them or the event. The resemblance between Zellweger and Garland does not have this writer completely sold, but there are admittedly some similar features. There aren’t too many other actresses that come to mind for this role. Zellweger is without a doubt one of the most talented actresses, with a wide range of genres working today, so even if the appearances are not 100% convincing, her performance is sure to be gold, and maybe deserving of gold come the following Awards season. It is always fascinating and inspiring to see real people portrayed in the movies.

Judy Garland was most recognized for her role as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, but among many other well-known qualities and successes, she was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for A Star is Born (1955), as well as for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). She left the world much too soon at the age of 47 due to a drug overdose in 1969.

Judy is scheduled to start filming in February with a release set for 2018.
