Though he’s still going strong in the role of Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. isn’t done with one of his past roles. In a recent interview, the actor confirmed that Sherlock Holmes 3 isn’t dead and that efforts are still being made to bring the movie into existence, among other movie plans, saying that “We're looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we're developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio."
The last official word on the project was back in 2016, when Team Downey assembled a writers room for the new Sherlock Holmes film, featuring Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Gary Whitta (Rogue One). Director Guy Ritchie also mentioned interest in returning to the franchise, though he is currently occupied with the live-action Aladdin adaptation.
RDJ has acknowledged that it may take some time for this project to take off, given the amount of work he has going on for the immediate future. Not only does he have Infinity Wars parts 1 and 2, but he also has the upcoming remake of Doctor Dolittle. The actor himself has acknowledged he has a lot on his plate right now.
"I have a million ideas, but I can tell you the God's honest truth. Having done Avengers 3 and 4 back-to-back, and now doing [Doolittle] ... When I'm done with this, if you hear I'm not taking a break, call me and tell me I'm crazy."
On the money side of things, Sherlock Holmes was a fairly successful movie franchise, making over one billion dollars combined at the box office, and with such star power in front of the camera, there is definitely financial incentive for the studio to get another one of these films out there. We’ll just have to see where RDJ is at once Doctor Dolittle has been completed.
