Okay? Okay. Take a deep breath, Nerdfighters, and prepare for a squeal fest. Make sure you’re sitting down. Are you ready for the news? The full-length, two minute and 30 second trailer for The Fault in our Stars feature film has been officially released! In this promo, fans get their first taste of what’s in store for this YA romcom without being completely spoiled to the movie’s plot. While the trailer surely will draw new people into the John Green fanbase, those who have read the author of the best-selling novel, of which this movie is based on, ultimately knows what happens to the title characters, Hazel and Gus. There is so much excitement over the film that the author, himself, Tweeted this: As the trailer opens, our cancer-survivor heroine Hazel lays in the grass looking at the stars. With music swelling, her inner-monologue begins, “I believe we have a choice in this world about how we tell sad stories. On one hand you can sugarcoat it. Where nothing is too messed up that it can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song. I like that version just as much as the next girl does. It’s just not the truth.” As we hear Hazel’s speech, clips of her happily with Gus play – them dancing, having dinner, laughing, kissing, and laughing some more. Then after fading to black, Hazel’s true life pans out before our eyes. Her walking into a cancer support group all the while hooked up to oxygen. Hazel’s gawky teen moments, like clumsily bumping into Augustus Waters at said group, being unaware of her beauty, and feeling like she’s “quite unextraordinary.” We see that she does like Gus, but she wants to keep him away because Hazel deems herself a “Grenade. One day I’m going to blow up and I’m going to obliterate everything in my path.” Part three of Hazel’s story unravels with this line. As she tells Gus this, we see Hazel’s health spin into a downward spiral and she’s rushed to the hospital. But it’s not all sad. Her words and illness don’t cause Gus (who is also a cancer-survivor) to bat an eye. At one point, he proclaims, “I love you, Hazel Grace. And I know that love is a shout into the void and that oblivion is inevitable and I am in love with you.” Even in the sadness and loss, there is a celebration of life. Hazel makes the most of her time. She finds ways to cope and to be happy in the face of her daunting future. Please, watch the video below and share your thoughts about the trailer!
