Benedict Cumberbatch has been a busy boy. Not only has he been hard at it back on the streets of London filming scenes for the third season of BBC’s hit Sherlock, but he’s also been out promoting his new film Star Trek Into Darkness. It’s no wonder that he might not know which way is up at the moment and let slip something that may not be finalised as yet.

Back in March 2013, Cumberbatch revealed that both he and Martin Freeman (John Watson) were signed up for two more seasons of the detective drama series. Speaking to Radio Times at the South Bank Show Awards he said “We’ve agreed to two more [series] but I could get into trouble for saying that… All I know at the moment is we’re doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three. I just don’t know what there is beyond that.”

However, this is obviously news to the serie’s producers. At Sunday night’s BAFTA TV awards, Radio Times approached Steven Moffat, co-creator of the series, to get confirmation on Cumberbatch’s statement since the BBC has been silent on the matter.

Unfortunately for fans, Moffat explained that he had no idea what Cumberbatch was referring to and that, at present, there are no plans for a fourth series. He described the producers reaction to the statement as “we were all in a state of shock at BBC Drama!”.

But fans will be pleased to know that Moffat hasn’t ruled out a fourth series at all. “If everyone wants to do it there will be a fourth [series].” Well obviously Cumberbatch is eager for it.

Meanwhile, we patiently wait for the third season to grace our screens, here are some recent pics from filming to tide you over.
