Not content with her global success with Grey’s Anatomy and returning show Scandal, Shonda Rhimes has got backing for her newest project.  ABC has just started development on Lawless, which is from the executive producer of Mistresses, KJ Steinberg and Ms Rhimes Shondaland.

The project which is based on a true story, tells of maverick lawyer Joanna James who tries to right the wrongs that were present in her old hometown.  The inspiration for the series is the trucker turned lawyer Wynona Ward who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father.  At the age of 41 she decided to become a lawyer and she started the group “Have Justice Will Travel”, which provides support for victims of domestic abuse in rural areas.

Lawless is being written by Steinberg, who is also acting as Executive Producer with Rhimes, and British producers Esther Douglas and Tara Cook.  This is not the first project that Steinberg and Rhimes have worked together on.  In 2011 they teamed up for Gilded Lilys and have also adapted British drama Mistresses which has just finished its first season on ABC.

Sounds like an interesting idea and so far no casting decisions have been made for the project.
