Amid some controversy, the poster and trailer for the upcoming Slender Man movie was released earlier this week.
Keeping true to his origin as a creepy character that is usually only partially visible, the poster only reveals the silhouette of Slender Man in condensation.
The trailer, in similar form, shows very little of the creepy character, instead focusing on the teenage characters and some more conventional horror tropes.
Though a popular meme, the release of promotional materials was faced with some backlash, most notably because of the recent case in which two girls stabbed a girl of the same age 19 times in hopes of showing their loyalty to the fictional character. Along with the public perception that this is cashing in on a tragedy—the film was approved two years after the crime, and one of the two girls involved in the stabbing, Anissa Weier, was sentenced in December to 25 years in a mental hospital—Anissa’s father has publicly condemned the film.
“It’s absurd they want to make a movie like this,” Weier has said. “It’s popularizing a tragedy is what it’s doing. I’m not surprised, but in my opinion it’s extremely distasteful. All we’re doing is extending the pain all three of these families have gone through.”
Slender Man is scheduled for release in May.
