It was not so long ago Drew Barrymore graced our Netflix accounts in Santa Clarita Diet, a story about a residential (but commercial on request) real estate agent, Sheila, who wakes up as a zombie. With her husband Joel and their daughter Abby, Sheila has to navigate the world of the undead and figure out how she can keep her normal life while surviving on the flesh of the living.
Spoilers ahead! Turn back if you have yet to finish the first season!
We last saw Sheila slowly giving in to her Id, or the more primal side of her. We discover this early on in the season when Eric, the son of their next door neighbor who happens to be a dirty cop, is brought into the fold to tell them what is wrong with Sheila. He reveals that zombies (although he does not approve of that word) are controlled by their Id and their impulses.
And Sheila fits that bill. She buys a Range Rover even though Joel said no, she goes out drinking and dancing with her neighbors, and she bites down on Gary's fingers.
Thankfully, Sheila has a great support system. When she does end up killing Gary after his failed sexual advances, Joel doesn't completely freak out. Instead, he helps her transport and bury the body (chopped up into pieces) in the desert. The only thing they really argue about is where the other person put the lid for the container they used.
Seriously, transporting a full body and its blood is a whole lot easier with a lid. Plastic wrap does not cut it.
Even Abby, their teenage daughter, is supportive of her mother's new lifestyle: introduces her parents to Eric, is cool with her mom eating raw meat, and even hides her knowledge of Sheila's upgrade to human flesh for a while. Skipping school probably did not help, but it made her feel good, and that's all that matters.
So what do we want to see in Season 2? The very last thing we saw, Sheila had locked herself up in the family's home basement and was asnwering a call about a new listing.
Sheila should continue to battle with her Id
At the end of Season 1, we see Sheila's increasing decline into an impulse-loving member of the undead. She nearly bites poor Joel's fingers off during foreplay! She should continue this battle in the second season, but still maintain her "cover" as a functioning member of the living.
Joel should learn to box
Or something similar. Seriously, when Loki stands next to him Joel looks like a teddy bear. The guy needs to channel some of his former jock or whatever and get some moves.
Loki should become an option
Yeah, yeah, Sheila already turned him down. But she was in full control of her Id at that point. With her impulse control growing, it would be interesting to see her and Loki team up.
Eric should grow a spine
Yes, Eric, having your weirdo bad cop step-dad disappear was really great, but that's just the tip of this iceberg that is your spine. This kid needs something to jump start his rage. Don't back down from conflict, bro!
Abby should go deeper into the world of the undead
It would be interesting to see Abby become a bit more involved with the world of the undead. We need someone besides Eric and that one doctor (and a couple hundred forum users) to arrange the bones, so to speak.
Those are just a few of the things we would like to see in Season 2! What do you think? Did we read your mind?
Santa Clarita Diet is projected to return to Netflix sometime in October/ November 2017!
