Sofi Vonn’s music has a way of instantly captivating listeners. Her passion comes through in her distinct voice, powerful lyrics – all of which she writes herself – and toe-tapping rhythms. Before becoming a singer, Sofi was a well-known New York City DJ, and her skills as both a DJ and a songwriter shine through on her new single “is it a crime?”, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere.
The song – the follow-up to debut release “Stranger” – offers another taste of what fans can expect from her upcoming debut EP and is driven and inspired by a universal set of feelings. Sofi was able to channel moments of loneliness and embarrassment she felt and experienced into something that she hopes will really connect to people’s inner need for acceptance. “In my head I often question some of my desires and ask myself ‘is it a crime?,’” Sofi says. “So, there is also that overlying theme that you shouldn’t feel embarrassed for knowing what you want, need or feel.” She adds that the track is: “…an emotionally driven song in which I discuss the need for a meaningful relationship but not wanting to admit it.”
While dealing with the difficulties of Covid-19 and having to quarantine, Sofi, like millions around the world, was hit hard by several emotions that were heightened by the ongoing crisis. “It was a very lonely time given that we were in the middle of the pandemic in the winter,” she explains. “I had been dating around without much success so this was sort of me just being like, is it a crime to want a relationship? The fact that dates also had to be outside in the cold probably didn’t help looking back at it, so I think some of that frustration contributed.”
