Universal chairman Adam Fogelson reveals a film adaptation of the popular musical is a studio priority. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Fogelson admitted that the project has not been officially green lit, but is something that the studio is eager to begin. ”Wicked has been an enormous win for this company. The way it works, we should be in agreement together on when the right time to do this is.”
Prior to this news it was reported that Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) was Universal’s top pick for director. Wicked is based on Gregory McGuire’s prequel novel of the same name dealing with Oz before Dorothy dropped in.
I’m interested to see how Universal will translate the book-turned-musical to film. The darker tone of the book is lost in the musical, and I always found that a bit disappointing. Also I speculate Universal is trying to get on the Oz bandwagon with all the hype surrounding Disney’s anticipated prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful. That being said what film are you most excited to see?
