Sony playStation Announces Game Streaming Service updates with project “Spartacus”

The initial report came from Bloomberg on December 4, but it spread like wildfire throughout the internet, and it’s still the talk of the town today.

While Sony PlayStation has stayed relatively quiet about getting into the game streaming business, they are finally announcing plans for a streaming service.

Spartacus is a project plan; it’s not the streaming services name. PlayStation will be doing a hard rebrand of the already available PlayStation Plus and Now services.

Microsoft Xbox launched its Game Pass program in 2017. It’s grown to a booming business in quite a short amount of time. Xbox Game Pass can be seen trending almost every day.

Although PS Now and PlayStation Plus have been around for a while, the goal is to combine the two, while dropping some original of the PS Now. Sony PlayStation announced they will be doing some revamping with the branding and content. It’s about time too, as well. Although game streaming was originally met with some pushback, it’s hard to ignore the possibilities now.

Over the past 4 years game streaming subscriptions have made many strides. As a matter of fact, Xbox Game Pass subscriptions were estimated at over 18 million as of January 2021, and is expecting to see a larger number this year when released.

There will be three tiers with different pricing and content available.

  1. PlayStation Benefits
  2. Select Catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games
  3. Extended demos, game streaming, and PS1 PS2 PS3 PSP games.

Although it doesn’t quite compare to Game Pass when it comes to big releases being available as soon as possible, it is a good start for Sony PlayStation as the company truly decides to dip its proverbial toes in the world of streaming. The newly revamped service is expected to launch this year.
