It worked for Veronica Mars and Zach Braff, so why not Spike Lee? The acclaimed filmmaker has taken to crowdfunding website Kickstarter to raise the money he needs to finance his next project.
The new film currently coined as “The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint” is hoping to raise $1.25 million in the next 29 days.
Lee is not exactly your typical Kickstarter owner, having released over 20 films, receiving two Academy Award nominations, awarded an Emmy and is recognised the world over for his filmmaking talents.
But as Lee himself says, “With the current climate in The Hollywood Studio System it’s not an encouraging look for Independent Filmmakers. I’m not hating, just stating the facts… I have a different vision of what Cinema can be, a different vision of what some under-served Audiences might want to see. That is why I am here on KICKSTARTER, to raise the Funds for The New Spike Lee Joint, to get this BAD BOY financed.”
There is little information given about what the JOINT will be, but in the campaign video Lee says “As human beings we have many addictions: drugs, alcohol, power, sex. This film is about the addiction of blood. A lot of sex in it too”

The campaign is offering some (as Lee puts it) “fly rewards” with the most extravagant being for donors pledging $10,000 or more – Dinner and the chance to sit courtside with Lee in his wife’s seat, for a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. People donating $5000 or more will receive Associate Producer credits and will have their name listed in the end credits and for $750+, donors will receive and autographed pair of Nikes worn by Lee.
In rounding out his Kickstarter plee, Lee says “Filmmaking is what I do. Filmmaking is what I love. And you guys help me keep it going, ‘cause this is a motherfucking tough business. I’m gonna keep fighting the powers that be”
