Sherlockians rejoice! The much-wanted and highly anticipated trailer for series 3 is released—and now, so is the official synopsis! BBC One has given fans a taste of what is to come in the hit British detective drama:

“The question on everyone’s lips will finally be answered when Sherlock returns.”

“How did he do it? And how will John take the news that his best friend faked his own death?”

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as the mystery-solving duo, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson this holiday season. Freeman’s wife, Amanda Abbington, will star in the new three episode series as Watson’s love interest, Mary Morstan.

The synopsis continues: “What will Sherlock think when he finds out John has fallen in love with Mary Morstan? She’s sensible, quick-witted and not at all taken in by Sherlock’s posturing.”

Mark Gatiss helps open the newest series with “The Empty Hearse,” followed by Stephen Thompson’s “The Sign of Three,” and Steven Moffat’s “His Last Vow.”

Lars Mikkelsen, star of The Killing, will make his first appearance on the show as Sherlock’s newest nemesis, Charles Augustus Magnussen.

Before we circle January 19, 2014 with a big red pen, be warned that PBS and BBC One might be airing Sherlock on different dates. The January date is official for PBS. BBC One, however, has yet to share its release.
