Spread Love, Not Hate: Mother Fan Girl Speaks Out!

Caitlin Swift

Staff Writer

Gather round kiddies, Mother Fan Girl is going to tell you a story. There was a time where I would call every Orlando number I saw posted on a message board in hopes of hearing the sweet, sweet voice of Justin Timberlake. Where I would say and post nasty things about Britney Spears (though I secretly loved her and still do), Cameron Diaz and so on and so forth. I shipped Ross and Rachel, Lizzie and Gordo, Will and Grace. I am a fan of many things but what I’m trying to say is, I get it. I get the feelings, I get where you are all coming from, but what I don’t get is all the hate.

Ship Wars and just all around negativity are starting to consume some of my favorite tags on tumblr. I am not going to call out any particular tag or fandom but some of my favorite ones have become so tarnished with hate. I just can’t wrap my head around it. These celebrities that you love, admire, and support are humans too, so why can’t they live their lives? Do you want people tweeting commenting on the way that you live your life? This isn’t just one or two tweets it’s a massive amount. We are blessed that we have the technology that allows us to be able to reach out to those we admire and idolize.

However, by hounding their life and mate choices we are ruining this perk. Not to mention making ourselves out to be the stereotypical fan. Why do we feel the need to dictate their life & career choices and threaten death upon people who do not agree with us? You aren’t defending your OTP you are being a bully plain and simple. The most comical thing about it is in one post you are threatening death upon a certain ship or blogger and in the next you are reblogging a post against cyber bullying. There is nothing admirable about that, you are not defending the faith of your fandom.

I’m not saying that there will never be a time where there is no tension but where we are at is not ok. You are allowed to voice your opinion but please don’t chastise others because they don’t agree. Harassment is a real issue and you can get in serious trouble for it. Just agree to disagree. Is someone saying your OTP is not meant to be really worth possible legal action (yes it’s an extreme but it has happened)? Not to mention some celebrities are starting to notice. Where are we getting with all the fighting? If anything we are just giving ourselves as fans a bad name.
