Stage Adaptation of Sing Street Headed to Broadway This Spring

Following a successful run at New York Theatre Workshop, the musical adaptation of the 2016 movie Sing Street will premiere on Broadway this spring.

Following a successful run at New York Theatre Workshop, the musical adaptation of the 2016 movie Sing Street will premiere on Broadway this spring. The creative team behind the musical includes direction by Rebecca Taichman, book by Edna Walsh, music and lyrics by Gary Clark and John Carney, and choreography by Sonya Tayeh. The 2016 film, written and directed by John Carney, developed a cult following among teenagers and young adults who, like the characters, love music and the escape it provides from the world.

Set in Dublin in 1982, it’s a time of economic hardship and people are looking for a better future in London. Sixteen-year-old Conor turns to music to escape trouble at home and at his new school, Synge Street, where he doesn’t quite fit in. When Conor meets a mysterious model, Raphina, who hangs out by the school, Conor and his classmates form a band to impress her. Together, they write songs and shoot music videos and embrace the power of and excitement of music, love, and friendship. With a score of catchy ‘80s new wave and pop songs that will get stuck in your head for days, this happy-sad musical is about finding the good times during the bad.

According to BroadwayWorld.com, the cast from the Off-Broadway production will reprise their roles on Broadway with Brenock O’Connor as Conor, Zara Devlin as Raphina, Max Bartos as Darren, Brendan C. Callahan as Gary, Billy Carter as Robert, Jakeim Hart as Larry, Martin Moran as Brother Baxter, Anne L. Nathan as Sandra, Johnny Newcomb as Barry, Gian Perez as Kevin, Sam Poon as Eamon, Skyler Volpe as Anne, Amy Warren as Penny, Ilan Eskenazi as the understudy cover, and Anthony Genovesi as drummer.

In anticipation of the Broadway premiere, the two songs from the Original Broadway Cast Recording, set for digital release on March 26, 2020, “Up” and “Drive It Like You Stole It” are available on all streaming platforms. There’s also a beautiful music video of “Up” that goes along with it, giving audiences a taste of what to expect.

Sing Street previews will begin on March 26, 2020, with opening night set for April 19, 2020 at the Lyceum Theatre 149 West 45th Street New York, New York.

Delaney spent the first six months of 2018 in Australia and then she wrote a book about it (“Here, There, and Everywhere” is available on Amazon print or e-book). She is currently working on her first screenplay and hopes to work on a movie or TV set one day.
