Starbucks has joined the Rainbow Parade. At the annual shareholders’ meeting in Seattle last Wednesday, CEO Howard Schultz basically told an investor to sell his shares and invest elsewhere for his anti-gay remarks.
The shareholder, Tom Strobhar, was called out after making remarks that the company’s support of gay marriage was harmful to profits after the boycott, referencing the boycott of Starbucks by the National Organization for Marriage.
CEO Schultz replied by saying that endorsing same-sex marriage wasn’t about profits, it was about embracing diversity.
“If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38 percent you got last year, it’s a free country. You can sell your shares of Starbucks and buy shares in another company. “ Schultz said (Huffington Post).
Mr. Strobhar is no stranger to being anti-human rights. He founded Corporate Morality Action Center, which is anti-abortion and anti-homosexual. He is a chair of the Virginia-based Life Decisions International, a company that has been fighting the goals of Planned Parenthood since 1992. His personal website claims he has fought gay marriage, abortion and even pornography in major companies such as Microsoft and Pfizer.
Now, to put things into simplified terms for you since this can seem overwhelming. The CEO of Starbucks is totally for gay marriage and human equality. Tom Strobhar is the exact opposite, anti- everything. No gay marriage, no abortions, no pornography.
I applaud you, CEO Howard Schultz. People like you are going to lead this country into the future. As for you, Mr. Strobhar, you can, how do I say this nicely? Disappear under your hateful rock and stay there.
