Stellan Skarsgard (Thor) is taking up arms for a new BBC crime drama series, River. The 62-year-old has been chosen to play John River, a   “brilliant but troubled officer” with a mind that, though slightly off from the norm, is key to solving the cases that cross his desk.

Abi Morgan (The Hour) and Charlotte Moore, BBC One Controller, are excited to start work on the six-part police drama.

River is full of intriguing twists and turns and I was truly gripped when the script came in,” Moore said.

Morgan will be making her BBC debut with River, and Moore is thrilled that the  talented screenwriter, who also worked on The Iron Lady, is joining the BBC team.

“Abi’s one of Britain’s most distinctive and original storytellers, and her ability to push the boundaries of the genre in surprising ways makes River her perfect debut on BBC One.”

River will add to Skarsgard’s already impressive resume, which includes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel films, and Nymphomaniac, among others.

The BBC will broadcast the first episode of River in 2015.
