Celebrated composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is preparing to return to the Great White Way!

This time, the Tony Winner is revisiting one of his classics, Company, which has won five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.

However, fans should expect a twist in this new revival!

Both the Hollywood Reporter and Broadway.com have confirmed that Sondheim and collaborator Tony-winning director John Tiffany are transforming the show’s central character, Bobby, into an open homosexual.

In addition, several of the show’s core characters will be updated including jaded boozer Joanne (originally played by Elaine Stritch) who will transform into a man and will be played by Tony-winning actor Alan Cumming.

“It’s still a musical about commitment, but marriage is seen as something very different in 2013 than it was in 1970,” Sondheim told the Hollywood Reporter.  “We don’t deal with gay marriage as such, but this version lets us explore the issues of commitment in a fresh way.”

Actors Bobby Steggert and Michael Urie will join Cumming at a reading of the revised musical on October 18.
