Ever since Michael Scott left his position as manager of Dunder Mifflin to live in Colorado with his fiancée Holly Flax, fans of The Office have been awaiting the day when the beloved character would someday pay the Scranton branch a visit. The perfect opportunity seemed to present itself in the series upcoming one-hour finale. Fans, though disappointed in the series’ end, were elated at the potential for Steve Carell to reprise his role as Michael Scott one last time.
However, it seems as though this wish will not be granted. Recently, Steve Carell confirmed that he will not be returning to his role for the finale. Carell told Access Hollywood, “I just didn’t think it was right for the character.” Though many respect Carell’s decision, fans are confused as to how he could imagine a visit to the Dunder Mifflin office not be right for the boisterous and friend-loving Michael Scott. Though Carell is right in saying that the “character had had an arch within the story and kind of grew and sort of evolved past the idea of the documentary,” the reaction of the fans is still one of general distaste.
As a fan of the series myself, I do agree with Steve Carell that Michael did grow up when he decided to move to Colorado with Holly. However, the entire seven seasons that he was the manager of Dunder Mifflin, Michael Scott loved every member of the office like they were his family, excluding Toby, and I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t have wanted to visit them, or at least invite them all to his and Holly’s wedding.
But, the show must go on, with or without Steve Carell and Michael Scott. The series will close with a one-hour finale sometime in May, ending its nine season run.
