Not too long ago, we heard the news that the great Steven Spielberg was attached to a new film project called The Post, centering on The Washington Post and their right to publish the Pentagon Papers, with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep confirmed to star. Liz Hannah is writing the script.
While most of us were very excited by this news with the trio involved, it was hard to get too excited, only because the project was listed as “in development,” so it would most likely be many years before Spielberg could start working on it given his already heavy list of film projects in the works (especially Ready Player One, due for release in 2018, and Indiana Jones 5, due for release in 2019).
Now Collider has reported that Spielberg, Hanks, and Streep have all cleared their schedules to work on The Post film right now in order to release it by this next Oscar season! They feel that with the current political state our country is in, now is the perfect time to tell this story.
It’s funny how we were excited by the initial announcement of the film but knew it would not be coming for a while, only to find out that it actually is coming sooner than we think. This is something you don’t see too often, especially with the caliber and busy lives of all three of these collaborators. Production begins in May, so it is not entirely impossible to have this thing out by December, although let’s hope it is a project that the three of these players can take their time with, rather than rushing to get it out at a prime time.
Why can’t other films that are announced be made this quickly? If anyone can pull off something like this with not much time allotted, it’s these three. And we can’t wait to see what they come up with, especially since we have never seen all three of them work together before.
The Post will hit theaters this fall or winter of 2017.
