Supergirl celebrated 100 episodes this week and it was a chance to revisit old stories, heroes, and villains, who have populated National City over the past five years. All season, Kara has been struggling with the outcome of her telling Lena the truth about being Supergirl. In this episode, Kara, with the help of Mr. Mxyzptlk, tries to find the right time in their friendship to tell her that results in them still being friends.
The first place Mxy snaps Kara is season 4, episode 2 “Fallout”, before Mercy Graves attacks L-Corp. When Kara tells Lena here that she is Supergirl, Lena takes it poorly and runs off to Metropolis to see Sam, who assures Lena she’s not a villain. However, this means that Lena is not in National City to save Kara when Graves poisons Earth’s atmosphere with kryptonite, killing Supergirl.
So, Mxy snaps Kara back to the present and they try again. This time, they go to season 3, episode 17 “Trinity” when the Worldkillers started the eclipse. Again, Lena doesn’t take it well when Kara tells her she’s Supergirl in this timeline either, wishing Kara could have been there for her when she found out Sam was Reign. Kara tries to convince Lena that they can move past this and work as partners, but Lena says she can’t trust her. Present Kara decides to see how this scenario plays out and Mxy snaps her in to talk to Mon-El, who tells Kara that once Lena sees that Kara was protecting her, she would forgive her. Of course, that ultimately doesn’t happen as Sam kills Lena and Mon-El.
Kara and Mxy try again and go back to season 2 when Kara and Lena first became friends. This time, when Kara tells Lena the truth, Lena takes it well, taking it as a sign of trust and respect. The timeline seems to be the right one to go back to until Ben Lockwood shows up and threatens to kill Lena if she doesn’t reveal Supergirl’s identity. Of course, Lena being as loyal as she is will never reveal that, which results in her and Coville getting captured. Supergirl’s worst nightmare has become a reality—getting someone she loves killed. So Supergirl announces her identity to the world, saving Lena and Coville, but that still results in Lockwood killing everyone close to Kara.
Kara begins to wonder if it would be better if she and Lena never became friends in the first place. Mxy takes Kara to a scary dystopia where Lena rules National City alongside Reign and emotionless Brainy and an army of H.O.P.E. lexosuit robots. Unfortunately, Mxy can’t access his fifth-dimension powers, leaving Kara, Mxy, Winn, Alex, J’onn, Kelly, and Nia to fight off Lena while they find a hat with fifth-dimension powers so Mxy can take Kara home and get out of this awful world, which they succeed in doing.
After all that time travel, Kara realizes that she can’t change the past. She just has to accept that what she did to Lena has consequences and that she needs to move on. She visits Lena and tells her that from now on, she’s accountable for her actions, whether she chooses to forgive Kara or not. Now it’s up to Lena.
