The South Korean singer Suran has crafted and curated music for over six years as an artist that encapsulates the concept of persistence. In that time, the singer has collaborated with high caliber talent including Heize, Suga, Ravi, Hwasa, and so many others, proving her talent is both recognized and appreciated by her peers as well as her loving fans. With several singles and collaborations out in the world, Suran essentially has nothing to prove to anyone – so an accomplishment that major deserves some relaxation.
In the singer’s new single “Blanket (feat. Wonstein)”, Suran presents her work through that idea, noting the coziness of a blanket itself, along with other comforts we might find in these trying times. Obviously, with the pandemic still very much a universal concern, it’s prompted Suran to shift gears with a good-vibe track that promotes the importance of taking a mental reprieve.
The transitional time has been difficult (for everyone in at least some capacity) but Suran wants listeners to know, it’s ok to embrace this forced downtime and relax – even if it’s with Netflix and a blanket. The singer’s music video (which has already amassed nearly 600,000 views in under a month) then added pure, effortless fun energy to the song and gave her the official title of relatable queen 2021. In fact, if you haven’t at least thought about putting together an unnecessary fit and dancing around the house since the pandemic – it’s going to be hard to establish any trust.
Aside from her down-to-earth persona through music, the Suran has also taken on the brave new endeavor of beginning her own label, and a move so courageous implies this good-natured artist has found her own identity. Now that Suran has shared her comfort music with fans and made cozy feel chic, we had to get talk to the singer about her single, Netflix-binging, and making music when the world is feeling especially unpredictable.
You’re quite the decorated artist, and “Blanket” is a beautiful moment that embraces the idea of just taking a beat to relax – did that laid-back idea change your style in the studio at all?
Suran: Thank you! Sure – because this song is more casual and fun, I felt like my life, in general, was naturally brighter too. However, I always put a lot of attention in the details while making music in the studio and that part didn’t change.
The song is really such an appropriate song granted recent universal circumstances – and having a little downtime can sometimes spark new inspirations too! What would you say was something that creatively changed for you during that time of stillness?
Suran: Because of the pandemic, we stay at home a lot more than before and there are no live performances. Naturally, I was able to use a lot of that time to focus on making music for my upcoming album and reflect more deeply about myself and my music.
You’ve collaborated with some incredible artists as well including Suga, Heize, Zico, and now Wonstein – what is something you look for in a collaborative partner?
Suran: The most important thing for me in collaborations is our synergy. For example, whether our voices match well for the song, whether our characters match, and whether our tastes line up for a project. It is important to me that we keep an open mind and create something more colorful and special.
“Blanket” is really rooted in this warm, cozy vibe that makes it a perfect playlist addition – but also something you can really enjoy repetitiously. When you think about other objects that give you a sense of comfort, what typically feels like your go-to?
Suran: Not trying to promote my new song, but my go-to is definitely chilling at home in my blanket! That and ordering delivery food, especially late at night!
You also give a nice Netflix shout-out on the song which is always a perfect thing to pair with a blanket! What are a few films/series that you would recommend for anyone looking to stay in and unwind?
Suran: I would recommend:
- Spirited Away from Studio Ghibli – absolutely the answer for chilling.
- Breaking Bad – when I want to go deep into another world.
- To All The Boys – cozy romantic comedy, perfect before sleeping.
- Lastly, any shows that introduce dream houses and interiors.
You recently launched your own label S-TASY, and it takes guts to step out and begin something completely under your own name which I wholeheartedly respect. What has been the biggest takeaway from this new endeavor for you so far?
Suran: That means a lot to me so thank you very much. I’ve really been learning a lot along the way. Because I let go and started this new endeavor, I am able to dream bigger than ever before. That is my biggest takeaway.
Any parting messages for your fans and supporters about upcoming projects you’d like to share?
Suran: I’m working hard on preparing my full album so thank you for being patient and I hope you will look forward to it!
“Blanket (feat. Wonstein)” is available now, so make sure to pair it with a little piece of your relaxation time!
