Skyfall was the most successful Bond movie ever; also becoming the highest grossing film ever in the UK, beating the likes of Avatar and Titanic. Mendes has said the reason for his departure, is to concentrate on his upcoming theatre projects.

Mendes told Empire magazine “It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie”. The well-established director already has theatre adaptions of King Lear and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory lined up.
